Production methodology
TrueCOLA publishes its monthly household margin report under a formal production methodology, version 2026.09. Under this standard, every household type uses exactly one Consumer Price Index end to end: the CPI-U for demographic groups drawn from the general urban population, and the CPI-W for households whose income federal law ties to statutory cost-of-living adjustments. Each calculation uses consistent basket weights, price escalators, and headline rates without mixing indexes on any row. See methodology for the index assignment of each household type.
